Recovering from a System Catastrophe

First do not panic. Although something terrible has happened to your system, don’t rush to do things that you might regret later.

Second acquire some imaging software if you haven’t purchased some already.

Perform a full system backup onto some available space on some other drive or system.

Fourth acquire some partitioning software if you haven’t done so already.

Perform a disk partition. At most do not exceed 40 GB for your primary partition.

Once you’ve done the above, it is now time to perform another backup image. If you have a volume license key for windows installation, then you might even consider performing p2v.

Locate a system that has the latest anti-virus software installed, but you wouldn’t mine losing in case it happens to get infected with something.

One other thing you might consider doing is using BartPE to recover some files and transfer them over to another system.
