Approximately 3 years ago, I purchased a Compaq Presario desktop computer. The system originally came with a 120.0 GB hard drive partitioned into two volumes. The primary partition had been formatted as NTFS and the second much smaller partition as FAT32. Windows XP Home Edition resided on the first larger partition and the Compaq System Recovery files resided on the second.

Luckily, at the time I decided to create a set of recovery CDs and even went as far as creating a clone (backup image) of the recovery partition. Three years later after making a few hardware modifications, I re-installed the operating system. First, I restored the recovery partition from the backup image onto a replacement hard drive since I could not find my set of original recovery CDs. Then I performed a full destructive System Recovery. However, it wasn’t long before I encountered an HP/Compaq “System Configuration Error” also known as “Code Purple”.

The following video footage was recorded during the Compaq System Recovery procedure. The video footage has been split into 3 parts. The footage has been posted on www.veoh.com and www.youtube.com. You can simply search for “Code Purple” or “gu1cho” on either web site, but the quality of the videos is much better on Veoh’s web site. The third video actually shows a method for avoiding the post system configuration check.

Update:
A fourth video has been posted that shows you how to avoid the post system configuration check with the assistance of a Ubuntu Linux v8.10 Live CD.
