Apple recently released a software update (1.1.1) for the iPhone that threatened to cause problems for users who have previously hacked their devices. As it turns out, the threat was real. Today, some users who in previous months felt brave enough to install 3rd party software applications have started to complain that their devices are now inoperable. On the otherhand, I had nothing to worry about; especially since I did not tweak (hack) any of the original software settings. Or did I?

Yesterday, I updated my iTunes software to the latest version (7.4.3.1) on my PC running Windows Vista Business Edition. Today, I updated the software on my iPhone. As it turns out, I am now also using a malfunctioning iPhone. I can no longer listen to my purchased songs on my device. If I tap on a song on my music playlist, the status bar does not progress to indicate that the song is indeed being played. Also, if I tap on the pause button then tap on the play button nothing changes. The immediate area around the play button temporarily changes to the color white but then immediately returns back to its normal color. That is, I can visually verify that the device has detected input but the play button does not change into the pause button as it previously did.

I have turned off the device and turned it back on to no avail. I am really disappointed. Now, it seems that I have to restore the iPhone to its original factory settings to restore iPod functionality.
