Safari on Windows and What’s to Come
June 13, 2007 | 1 Comment
At WWDC 2007, Apple publicly announced the immediate availability of Safari 3 beta for Mac OS X Tiger, Leopard, Windows XP and Vista. Should it come as a surprise that Apple would release another application for Windows; let alone a web browser? Absolutely not. The reason. The most talked about device of 2007, the iPhone.
Safari as a web browser has not been taken seriously as other browsers on the market; especially, since only a couple of days ago it was only available on the Mac OS X platform. A lot of web sites do not even bother to test their web applications with Apple’s browser. You do not have to be a computer expert to realize that Macs make up a small percentage of the overall computer market.
However, Apple would love it if software developers could start creating online content fully compatible with the iPhone. After all, the device is running a “full” version of the Safari engine. Apple fully realizes and understands that most web developers do their day to day programming on Windows-based PCs. Many may not be interested in purchasing a Mac for the sole purpose of testing. Like the majority of music listeners who use PCs and wouldn’t like to purchase a Mac to sync their iPods, they may not mind downloading an Apple software application for Windows. Apple is now intent on allowing web developers to stay in their comfort zones of both creating and testing web applications.
