A few days ago, a close friend of mine informed me about a possible problem with her MacBook Pro battery. She stated that it wasn’t functioning as expected. The symptoms that she described were “Although the operating system indicates a fully charged battery if I unplug the AC adapter from power, the computer will abruptly turn off. If the computer has been previously turned on with the battery as its only source of power, then I can briefly manage to log in and launch an application. However, within a few minutes the screen will start to flicker and eventually turn pitch black followed by the power LED turning off as well.”

I felt kind of bad for her since I’m the one who encouraged her to purchase Apple hardware; even after she had only expressed interest in lesser expensive Windows-based notebooks.

It’s been over a year since I made that recommendation. In fact she was one of the first few people who purchased a first generation MacBook Pro. However, upon receiving her new computer she encountered a few system glitches. She immediately contacted Apple Technical Support. At the time for some unknown reason, the computer would spontaneously shut down every so often. The cause of the problem could not be determined, so Apple readily agreed to send her a replacement computer (identical model).

She received the replacement a few days later and up until now did not report any further problems; besides the battery recall from like a year ago.

In preparation for troubleshooting the latest hardware related problem with her MacBook Pro, I video recorded some of the symptoms that are described above. However, it appears that it is now a known issue to Apple and that the company has taken the appropriate steps to remedy the problem for its customers.
