Last November, I made a promise. I made a promise to my 11 year-old niece that I would purchase a new computer for her. It was a few days before her birthday, but I stipulated that it would be an Intel-based Mac and that she would have to learn how to use a new operating system. Up until then she had only been exposed to Windows 98, Me, XP and SUSE Linux.

I kept delaying the actual purchase of the computer by rationalizing with her that Apple had plans to release a new OS; therefore, she should wait. Although Apple never officially announced a firm release date for Mac OS X Leopard (10.5), I anticipated that the OS would be released some time in the first half of 2007. Early in 2007, Apple finally made an announcement that they were on track to release their new OS by Spring 2007. Until just a few days ago, I kept telling my young niece that she should expect her new computer by the end of June this year. Even then, I expected to purchase new hardware by the end of Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) taking place in San Francisco, CA from June 11 -15, 2007.

Now with the recent announcement from Apple that Leopard will be delayed until October 2007, I cannot justify delaying the purchase of the computer any longer. Shortly after the announcement was made I was in disbelief and continued to plead with her that we should extend the purchase date a bit further as Apple may also announce possible hardware upgrades for their existing products. However, I just couldn’t bring myself from keeping her from the Mac OS X experience. Not to mention her next birthday is just a few days away from the new target release date and her Windows Vista experience has not been exceptional.
