When it comes to using the latest and greatest in software and hardware you like to be at the vanguard of it all. In fact, you have already completely wiped out your old operating system from your computer and taken the plunge into the unknown by installing Microsoft’s latest operating system. You feel comfortable and confident and are ready to start administering various computers and user accounts in your domain. Then reality sets in. Microsot has yet to release an updated MMC snap-in to manage Active Directory Users and Computers. You don’t believe me so you decide to visit Microsoft’s Download Center web site. Shocking, but true it does not list Windows Vista as a supported operating system for the installation of Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 Administration Tools Pack.

Ahhh! The pain. The humiliation. You’ve taken so much time to configure Windows Vista and dislike the idea of going back to using Windows XP. You say the heck with it and install the Administration Tools Pack anyway. The installation appears to go smoothly and you think to yourself this guy doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Now you think you’re ready to open dsa.msc and want to start managing Active Directory Users and Computers. However, you recieve the following error message: “MMC could not create the snap-in.”

According to an article posted on Microsoft’s web site, the cause of the problem is the following:
“This issue occurs because the Administration Tools Pack is not installed by a user who has administrative user rights. New security enhancements in Windows Vista require elevated user rights when a .dll file is registered. Therefore, Windows Vista security enhancements require that certain snap-ins are installed only by a user who has local administrative user rights.”
