Limited users unable to view flash content after updating Macromedia Flash Player to version 8.0.24

Although Adobe is urging users of its popular Macromedia Flash Player to update to the latest version, some users are experiencing problems when attempting to view flash content within Internet Explorer. In Windows XP, if you have a limited user account; that is if you belong to the Users or Power Users group, then you will be unable to view flash content within Internet Explorer. Instead, when viewing a web page you get a white box with a red X on the upper left-hand corner where flash content should appear. Adobe has posted a temporary fix to address the issue.

If you have the latest version (8.0.24) of the player installed on your computer, then have someone with an administrator account log in and edit the registry. Otherwise, anyone with a limited user account will be unable to view flash content within Internet Explorer. Please view the following two images to confirm that you are experiencing similar problems as described above.

Please have someone with an administrator account perform the following to fix the problem:

1) Click on Start, then select Run…
2) Type regedit, then click on OK
3) In the Registry Editor, expand My Computer
4) Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}

5) Right-click on {D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000}, then select Permissions…
6) Select Everyone from Group or user names
7) Select the Allow Read check box, then click on Apply
8) Close the Registry Editor

Now you may visit a web site that has flash content.
